Master’s Guide: DAAD Study Scholarships for All Academic Disciplines
A Comprehensive Breakdown of the Fully-Funded Master's Track for Afghan & International Applicants
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) offers one of the most prestigious and generous fully funded scholarship programs in the world. While many students are familiar with the DAAD EPOS track, the DAAD Study Scholarship – Master’s Studies for All Academic Disciplines is a separate, highly sought-after track that does NOT require 2 years of professional work experience.
In a recent expert webinar hosted by Kaaj Education, Ataullah Eliasy, a DAAD scholar who completed his Master’s in Geomatics at the Karlsruhe University in Germany and founder of Knowledge Bridge—shared an in-depth breakdown of how Afghan students and international applicants can successfully prepare and apply for this life-changing opportunity.
Application Window & Key Deadlines
Because DAAD applications for the "All Academic Disciplines" Master's track operate almost a full year in advance of university enrollment, timing is critical:
- Application Portal Opening: Applications typically open annually in June.
- DAAD Application Deadline: 31 August.
- Funding & Class Start: Scholarship funding and university classes begin in October (Winter Semester).
What the Scholarship Covers
The DAAD "All Academic Disciplines" Master’s scholarship provides a complete financial safety net for scholars:
- Monthly Stipend: €934 to €992 per month to cover living expenses.
- Travel Allowance: Fully funded round-trip airfare to and from Germany.
- Insurance Coverage: Health, accident, and personal liability insurance paid for by the DAAD program.
- Study & Research Allowance: An annual grant of €460 to cover academic materials and books.
- German Language Course: Fully covered preparatory German language course (usually between June and September) if your chosen degree or daily life requires it.
- Family Support Allowance: Additional monthly allowances for scholars traveling with spouses or children.
Key Eligibility Requirements
Unlike the EPOS track, this scholarship is open to final-year students and recent graduates:
- No Work Experience Required: You do NOT need 2 years of professional work experience to apply.
- Final-Year Students (Semester 7/8): If you are currently in your final year or 7th semester of university, you are eligible to apply. You will need to submit your final degree certificate before starting your studies in Germany (e.g., September/October).
- The 6-Year Rule: Your Bachelor’s degree must not be older than 6 years at the time of the application deadline.
- Academic Excellence: Strong university transcripts and academic records.
Application Strategy & University Admissions
During the session, Mr. Ilyasi highlighted a crucial procedural distinction:
- DAAD First, University Second: When applying for the DAAD scholarship, you do NOT need an official university admission letter immediately. You select up to three Master’s programs in your DAAD portal form.
- University Application Phase: Once DAAD issues award letters (typically around February), applicants then apply directly to their selected German universities when university application portals open.
Key Documents to Prepare
- 1. DAAD Online Application Form: Completed via the official DAAD portal.
- 2. Euro pass CV: Signed, formatted in reverse chronological order, with all gaps longer than 3 months clearly explained.
- 3. Letter of Motivation: A compelling 1–3 page personal statement outlining your academic goals, research interests, and future career plans.
- 4. Academic Transcripts & Diplomas: Official, certified English or German translations.
- 5. Language Proficiency Proof: IELTS/TOEFL for English-taught programs or DSH/TestDaF for German-taught programs.
